Destination Photography

A destination photography session is a photoshoot that takes place in a location outside of the clients' home, chosen for its unique or special meaning. This can be for engagement photos, family portraits, or other types of photography and offers a memorable experience alongside a unique backdrop. The photographer travels to the chosen destination to capture the images, which may involve the client hiring a local photographer or bringing a photographer they've already worked with.

Key aspects of a destination photography session

  •          Location: The session occurs in a location away from the clients' home, such as a favorite travel spot, a place with a special meaning to them, or a place they've always wanted to visit.
  •          Purpose: Beyond getting great photos, these sessions are also about creating a memorable experience and a unique story. Couples often use them to get to know their photographer better in a new setting.
  •          Participants: The "destination" aspect refers to the location, not necessarily the type of session. It can be an engagement session, a family portrait session, or even a senior photoshoot.
  •          Logistics: The photographer travels to the location, which may require them to fly, and they will need to arrange for travel, lodging, and transportation to and from the site. Sometimes, the photographer's schedule may already align with the client's travel plans.

In addition to the cost for a particular photo session. There are additional costs associated with a destination photography session:

  •          Travel by vehicle: The standard IRS mileage rate applies (.58 per mile) plus tolls and parking.
  •          Travel by aircraft: Plane ticket, parking, and travel to the photo session.
  •          Accommodation: Hotel expenses for a minimum of three days.
  •          Additional Expenses: per diem, postage, etc.

Choosing the Right Sized Wall Art

The ideal size for wall art depends on the wall and furniture, but generally, the artwork's width should be two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the wall or the furniture it's above. For walls, consider larger pieces like 24"x36" or 30"x40" as a statement above a sofa or bed, while smaller sizes like 8"x10" or 11"x14" are better for shelves or gallery walls.

General guidelines

  • For large walls: Use oversized pieces (e.g., 36"x48"+) or a gallery wall to fill the space without looking sparse.

  • For walls with furniture: Aim for a piece that is two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the furniture (e.g., sofa, bed, dresser).

  • For small walls or narrow spaces: Choose smaller pieces or vertical arrangements to avoid overcrowding the area.

Specific size examples by function

  • Statement pieces: Use large to oversized pieces like 24"x36", 30"x40", or 36"x48" to make a bold focal point above a sofa, bed, or on a large blank wall.

  • Shelves and small nooks: Use smaller, more manageable sizes like 8"x10", 11"x14", or a collection of smaller prints (e.g., 4x6, 5x7).

  • Gallery walls: A mix of sizes can work, but a good rule of thumb is to keep the total arrangement's dimensions balanced with the wall or furniture below it.

  • Hallways and staircases: A linear arrangement or pieces that follow the angle of the stairs can guide the eye along the space.

Tips for choosing the right size

  • Measure your space: Before buying, measure the wall and any furniture to get a sense of the scale.

  • Use a visualizer: Some online services offer tools where you can see how a piece will look on your wall before purchasing.

  • Consider adding a mat: A mat around the photo can increase its overall visual size, which can be helpful for filling space.
